The book and the course are written by David Cole (Brother Cassian).
The course has 2 start dates, May and November.
Each month students will receive an email with the course material which will be expanding upon the material in the book and will also have further reading suggestions wider than the references found in the book. The student will then write a response between 500 and 1,000 words to show their own thoughts and learning.
It is assumed that you have read the book ‘The Art of Peace- life lessons from Christian mystics’ either before you take the course or will use it as the base reading text during the course.
The 6 months will be as follows:
Month 1: Awakening Spiritual Consciousness. An introduction into Christian mystic thought and teaching. Moving out of the Western mindset and into the heart and soul of mysticism, this month creates the roots from which the rest of the course will grow.
Month 2: Stillness. Looking at the chapters ‘slowing down’, ‘be still and know’, and ‘still here’, this month will focus on our need to slow down and create a lifestyle which is more sustainable for our mental well-being and our spiritual development.
Month 3: Silence. Looking at the chapters ‘in pursuit of silence’, ‘into the silent land’, and ‘the wordless way’ this month will focus on the power of silence and the necessity of apophatic thought, that is the unknowing of our concepts of God to enable us to move beyond our words and concepts into a deeper reality of the Divine.
Month 4: Solitude. Looking at the chapters ‘go to your cell’, ‘the desert of your heart’, and ‘alone together’, this month will focus at the balance of being along and being connected to a spiritual community of people. Understanding the importance between dependence, independence, and the more important interdependence.
Month 5: Sanctuary. Looking at the chapters ‘seeking refuge’, ‘natural space’, ‘contemplata aliis tradere’, this month will look at the internal and external journey into the sanctuary to be found in our world and our heart and how we express to those we encounter the wisdom of Divine silence that our own practice roots within us.
Month 6: Living in an Awakened State. A conclusion to what has been looked at, and a look at how we each go from here to live in a more spiritually awakened state and more connected to the Divine peace which is beyond our understanding, to enable us to be the embodiment of that peace in the world to bring peace to it.
Participants will receive an email during the first week of each month from May to October or November to April. There will be some teaching about the subject and some suggested reading to further your study with a short response required from the student. Course fees are £25 per month payable monthly or as one block of £150 for the whole course. If you are paying monthly, payments will be due by the last day of the previous month Payments can be made via paypal.
If you sign up as a group of 10 or more then the course cost reduces to £120 per person instead of £150.
